Iambic tetrameter

Four iambs to the line, eight syllables. The commonest short line in English, the measure of hymns, ballads, Marvell, Milton's L'Allegro and a great deal of Byron and Scott. What iambic tetrameter is

Four beats to the line, each one a light syllable and then a heavy one: da-DUM four times, eight syllables. The commonest short line in English, the line of hymns, ballads, Marvell and a great deal of Byron and Scott.

How to tell

Eight syllables with the heavy ones on the even positions. It is easy to confuse with trochaic tetrameter, which also has four beats but puts the heavy syllable first: if most lines begin on a heavy syllable and end on one, with seven syllables, the poem is trochaic.
