Trochaic tetrameter

What trochaic tetrameter is

Four beats to the line, each one a heavy syllable and then a light one: DUM-da four times, eight syllables, or seven when the last light syllable is dropped, which it usually is. The line of Hiawatha and of much verse for children and spells.

How to tell

The line begins on a heavy syllable and usually ends on one too, seven syllables in all. This is the metre most often misread as iambic tetrameter, because an iambic line that drops its first syllable looks the same on paper; listen to how the lines begin.
