James Macpherson (1736–1796) · 1760

Free verse · unrhymed · 12 lines · from Fragments of Ancient Poetry

What voice is that I hear? That voice like the summer wind. ("Fragment I")

The warriours saw her, and loved;Their souls were fixed on the maid. Each loved her, as his fame; Each must possess her or die.But her soul was fixed on Oscur; My son was the youth of her love. ("Fragment VII")

Autumn is dark on the mountains;Grey mist rests on the hills. The whirlwind is heard on the heath.Dark rolls the river through the narrow plain. ("Fragment V")

Form and metre

Completion is 12 lines in 3 verse paragraphs. It is unrhymed, as far as the pronouncing dictionary can tell. 90% of its stressed syllables fall where the metre puts the beat. The lines average 8.2 syllables. 1 line ends on an unstressed syllable, a feminine ending.

Measured by Laurel's pipeline, not copied from a handbook: how stress and metre are counted, how rhyme is lettered, how a drifted rhyme is found. Where the dictionary cannot confirm a rhyme the letter is withheld, not guessed.

Scansion, line by line

Each line with its syllable count and the stresses the words themselves fix: / stressed, ˘ unstressed, · a syllable the word leaves free and the metre decides. How this is done.
