Gitanjali 22

Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) · 1912

9 lines · from Gitanjali (Song Offerings)

In the deep shadows of the rainy July, with secret steps, thou walkest, silent as night, eluding all watchers.

Today the morning has closed its eyes, heedless of the insistent callsof the loud east wind, and a thick veil has been drawn over theever-wakeful blue sky.

The woodlands have hushed their songs, and doors are all shut at everyhouse. Thou art the solitary wayfarer in this deserted street. Oh myonly friend, my best beloved, the gates are open in my house—do notpass by like a dream.

About this section

Gitanjali 22 is prose, printed in 3 paragraphs. It is part of the edition and is kept for reading, but nothing here is measured: the line breaks are the printer's, so no metre, rhyme scheme or scansion is stated.

The reader shows the same poem with its rhymes coloured and a stress row above each line, the notes beside their stanzas, and any word's definition on a tap; the analysis page takes the whole book apart. How every part of this site was made.
