A Waist

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) · 1914

8 lines · from Tender Buttons

A star glide, a single frantic sullenness, a single financial grassgreediness.

Object that is in wood. Hold the pine, hold the dark, hold in the rush, make the bottom.

A piece of crystal. A change, in a change that is remarkable there is noreason to say that there was a time.

A woolen object gilded. A country climb is the best disgrace, a coupleof practices any of them in order is so left.

About this section

A Waist is prose, printed in 4 paragraphs. It is part of the edition and is kept for reading, but nothing here is measured: the line breaks are the printer's, so no metre, rhyme scheme or scansion is stated.

The reader shows the same poem with its rhymes coloured and a stress row above each line, the notes beside their stanzas, and any word's definition on a tap; the analysis page takes the whole book apart. How every part of this site was made.
