A Long Dress

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) · 1914

8 lines · from Tender Buttons

What is the current that makes machinery, that makes it crackle, what isthe current that presents a long line and a necessary waist. What isthis current.

What is the wind, what is it.

Where is the serene length, it is there and a dark place is not a darkplace, only a white and red are black, only a yellow and green are blue,a pink is scarlet, a bow is every color. A line distinguishes it. A linejust distinguishes it.

About this section

A Long Dress is prose, printed in 3 paragraphs. It is part of the edition and is kept for reading, but nothing here is measured: the line breaks are the printer's, so no metre, rhyme scheme or scansion is stated.

The reader shows the same poem with its rhymes coloured and a stress row above each line, the notes beside their stanzas, and any word's definition on a tap; the analysis page takes the whole book apart. How every part of this site was made.
