The Silence of Love

George William Russell (1867–1935) · 1904

iambic tetrameter · AABB · 12 lines · from The Divine Vision and Other Poems

I could praise you once with beautiful words ere you cameAnd entered my life with love in a wind of flame.I could lure with a song from afar my bird to its nest,But with pinions drooping together silence is best.

In the Land of Beautiful Silence the winds are laid,And life grows quietly one in the cloudy shade.I will not waken the passion that sleeps in the heart,For the winds that blew us together may blow us apart.

Fear not the stillness; for doubt and despair shall ceaseWith the gentle voices guiding us into peace. Our dreams will change as they pass through the gates of gold,And Quiet, the tender shepherd, shall keep the fold.

Form and metre

The Silence of Love is 12 lines in 3 stanzas of 4 lines each. Every stanza rhymes AABB. 88% of its stressed syllables fall where the metre puts the beat. The lines average 12.3 syllables. 17% of the lines run on without a stop at the line end.

Measured by Laurel's pipeline, not copied from a handbook: how stress and metre are counted, how rhyme is lettered, how a drifted rhyme is found. Where the dictionary cannot confirm a rhyme the letter is withheld, not guessed.

Rhyme words, stanza by stanza

The word that ends each line, lettered by the rhyme it makes; a dash is a line whose rhyme the dictionary could not confirm.
